About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this photo during my visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany. The camp, located near Munich, was the first of its kind and opened in 1933. It's a somber place with a heavy history, and I wanted this picture to capture some of that weight. Using my Canon EOS 7D with a wide-angle EF-S10-22mm lens allowed me to include much of the crematorium's interior structure, giving a fuller view of the space. The stark brick and metal details show the harsh reality of the crematoriums used during that dark period. Dachau was originally intended to hold political prisoners, but over time it became a place of terrible inhumanity, with thousands losing their lives here. The lighting inside the room adds to the solemn mood, as natural light highlights the industrial architecture. It's a place that reminds us of the importance of remembering history to prevent anything like this from happening again.
