About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Beautiful Wilderness was photographed on the shoreline at Totem Bight State Historical Park near Ketchikan, Alaska, in the United States, on a bright day in the warmer season. I made this photo from a low coastal viewpoint where the grassy foreground opens straight onto calm blue water, forest, and distant mountains.

What pulled me in was the mix of small details and big space. The two deer grazing in the grass give the scene a quiet, everyday feeling, while the bay and the dark evergreen ridges behind them make it feel very remote at the same time. I like that contrast. Nothing in the frame feels staged. It is just a simple moment on the edge of the water, with the animals relaxed and the landscape stretching out behind them.

The light is clean and even, with enough sun to bring out the deep blue of the water and the fresh green of the shore without making the scene feel harsh. The snow still visible on some of the higher peaks in the distance adds a nice sense of season and place. It feels like that part of the year when everything is waking up again, but the mountains are still holding onto winter.

I kept a fairly wide view so the deer would stay part of the landscape instead of becoming the whole subject. That was important to me. The point of the photo is not only the wildlife, and not only the scenery, but the way both exist together so naturally in coastal Alaska. The rocky edge, the still inlet, the wall of spruce, and the layered mountains all help tell that story.

What I remember most is how quiet it felt standing there. There was no need to chase anything dramatic. The scene already had its own balance. I just waited for the deer to settle into the foreground and framed the shoreline so the water could lead the eye across the picture. For me, this photograph is about the calm side of Alaska, where wild animals and open land feel like a normal part of the day.
