About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Vernazza harbor in Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy, photographed from the hillside above the village in bright afternoon light. I made this photo from the Sentiero Vernazza–Monterosso viewpoint, looking down over the small bay, the pastel buildings, and the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia.
What I like about Vernazza is how compact everything feels when you see it from above. The harbor is small, but from this angle it holds almost the whole rhythm of the village at once: fishing boats in the clear water, the tight line of old buildings around the piazza, and the church sitting right at the edge of the sea. The light was strong and clean, which made the colors stand out without needing much help. The water had that clear turquoise tone, and the walls of the houses shifted between pink, yellow, orange, and faded red in a way that felt very natural.
I took this from the trail on the Monterosso side, high enough to get a full view of the harbor but still close enough to keep the place feeling personal. The leaves and grass in the foreground helped frame the village and kept the scene connected to the hillside path instead of turning it into a distant postcard view. Off to the right, Doria Castle and its stone tower add another layer and help show how the village is tucked between the sea and the steep slopes.
I also like how the church anchors the left side of the frame. Its striped stonework and dome stand out immediately, and they give the whole scene a sense of structure among the tightly packed homes. Even with plenty going on in the frame, the curve of the harbor keeps the eye moving in a simple way. For me, this photo is less about a single landmark and more about the way Vernazza fits together when you catch it from above on a clear day.
