About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Jiuqu Bridge in Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai, is the spot where I took this photo on a calm daylight visit. I was standing on the bridge looking across the pond toward one of the traditional buildings inside the garden complex.

What I liked most was how layered the scene felt without being crowded. The white statue in the water gives the frame a clear foreground, then the pond and trimmed edge of greenery lead straight to the dark tiled roof and red wooden windows behind it. The building has that classic Jiangnan garden look, with curved rooflines, white walls, and deep red woodwork, and it sits really nicely against the soft blue sky.

The light was even and gentle, which helped keep the details in both the roof tiles and the pale statue. Nothing is too harsh, and that gave me room to hold the contrast between the dark architecture and the bright wall surfaces. I also liked the small touches around the pond, especially the floating lotus decorations and the reflections moving across the green water. They make the whole place feel lived in rather than staged.

I framed it from the bridge so the statue would sit low and centered while the building filled most of the upper part of the image. That balance was the main reason I stopped for this composition. With the 24-105mm lens, I could keep the scene tight enough to simplify the background while still showing the pond and the shape of the garden around it.

For me, this photo says a lot about Yuyuan without trying to show everything at once. It is a quiet garden view in the middle of a busy part of Shanghai, and that contrast is part of what made the moment worth photographing.
