About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Hallstatt Market Square in Hallstatt, Austria, photographed during a spring or early summer evening. I took this in the center of town at Marktplatz, with the Marian column, pastel houses, and the Evangelical Church rising behind them at the base of the wooded hillside.

What I liked most about this scene was how everyday it felt despite being in one of the most photographed villages in Austria. The square was quiet, the cobblestones were slightly dark from recent moisture, and the soft light made the yellow, pink, and white facades look warm without feeling too polished. The red vintage van on the right gave the frame a nice bit of weight and color, and it helped balance the open space of the square.

I framed the photo wide enough to keep the market fountain and column near the middle while still showing the row of houses that gives Hallstatt its familiar look. The church tower in the background adds another clear landmark, but for me the photo is really about how all these small pieces sit together in one compact square. Nothing is isolated. The buildings, the statue, the parked van, and the steep green hillside all share the frame in a very natural way.

I shot this with my Canon EOS 7D and the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8, which worked well for a town scene like this because I could stay fairly close and still include the square, the architecture, and the slope behind the village. I did not want a dramatic perspective. I wanted it to feel like standing there for a minute and taking in the center of Hallstatt as it actually looked that evening.
