About This PhotoThe Story Behind

The murals in Little India, Singapore were photographed on a bright day along Belilios Road, near the center of the neighborhood. I made this photo during a walk through the district when the light was still soft enough to keep the wall colors clear without turning harsh.

What caught my attention first was how much of the street's history had been painted onto one wall. The mural shows everyday scenes, work, and movement, and it feels closely tied to the identity of Little India rather than just being decoration. I liked the way the deep blue and purple background held everything together, while the painted figures, objects, and the bicycle gave the wall a strong sense of rhythm.

I framed the scene from street level so the mural would feel large and present, with the full height of the wall rising above the road. That angle also helped keep the real street in the foreground, which makes the image feel more connected to daily life instead of turning into a flat record of artwork. The person walking through the frame adds scale and a bit of energy, but the mural itself stays as the main subject.

Little India is one of those parts of Singapore where I naturally slow down with my camera. There is always a lot to look at, but this wall stood out because it says something about the place in a direct way. It is colorful without feeling random, and busy without losing structure. I also liked the contrast between the painted scenes and the plain road in front of them.

I shot it with my Canon 5D Mark IV and a 24-105mm lens, which worked well for this kind of street scene. I could keep enough of the building in frame while still giving the mural some weight. For me, the photo is about that mix of public art, neighborhood character, and the everyday pace of walking through Little India.
