About This PhotoThe Story Behind

I captured this striking image of the Knossos Palace in Crete, bathed in the warm glow of the afternoon sun. The vibrant reds of the grand columns stood out vividly against the deep blue sky, and the fresco displaying the iconic bull leapt from its background, whispering tales of ancient rituals and myths. This archaeological site, dating back to the Bronze Age, was the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization. As I walked through the ruins, I could almost sense the echoes of the bustling activities that must have taken place here thousands of years ago. Knossos is the largest Bronze Age site on Crete and is considered Europe's oldest city. The thoughtful restoration attempts to preserve the essence of what Sir Arthur Evans, who excavated Knossos in the early 20th century, imagined its ancient grandeur to be. Surrounded by crumbling stones and ancient pathways, standing here feels like stepping back into a world rich with history, art, and culture that shaped the very foundation of European civilization.
