About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this photo during a trip to Narok County in Kenya. It was one of those lazy Sunday mornings where everything just felt relaxed. These hippos were lying around near a small waterhole. Hippos are fascinating creatures. They spend most of their day in water, but here they seemed to be enjoying some time on land, just basking in the soft morning light.
I used my Canon EOS 7D with a 100-400mm lens to get a closer look without disturbing them. The telephoto lens really helped to capture the details of their skin, showing all the textures and colors. There’s something peaceful about watching these massive animals just lounging around. They looked so calm and unbothered in their little gathering.
Narok County is home to parts of the Maasai Mara, one of Kenya's most famous wildlife reserves. While I was there primarily to see larger animals like elephants and lions, these hippos made quite an impression. They're often considered one of Africa’s most dangerous animals, but here, they seemed content and gentle. It’s moments like these that remind us of the quieter side of wildlife. Watching them just hang out together, it's easy to forget their fierce reputation.
The scene was quite serene. Just observing them, I felt a sense of calm too. It’s amazing how something as simple as hippos lazing around can offer such a rich experience and a glimpse into their daily lives.
