About This PhotoThe Story Behind

The Leaning Tower of Pisa stands in Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, Italy, beside the Pisa Cathedral. I photographed it from the Cathedral Square side during the day, just after rain, with wet stone underfoot and a bright break in the clouds above.

I liked this angle because it shows more than the tower on its own. The fountain in the foreground and the side of the cathedral help place the tower in its real setting, not just as the famous leaning landmark people already know. From this spot in Piazza del Duomo, also known as Piazza dei Miracoli, the tilt feels clear but not exaggerated, and the stacked arcades have room to stand out against the sky.

The weather did a lot for the picture. The pavement was still shiny from rain, and the clouds were moving apart, leaving patches of blue behind the tower. That mix gave the stone a softer tone than it would have had in hard sun. I also like the small bits of everyday movement around the base. They give some scale without taking attention away from the architecture.

I shot this with my Sony DSC-R1, and its lens worked well for this kind of view. I could keep the fountain, the cathedral, and the full height of the campanile in the same frame without making the scene feel too cramped. That mattered here, because the relationship between these elements is what makes the place feel real to me.

What stayed with me most was how familiar the tower is, yet how different it feels when you are actually standing in the square. The lean is obvious, but so is the texture of the marble, the repetition of the arches, and the quiet balance between the tower, the cathedral, and the open sky.
