About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Portofino harbor in Portofino, Italy, seen from Castello Brown above the village. I made this photo on a clear afternoon, looking down over the marina, the pastel waterfront buildings, and the boats sitting in the bay.
I liked this angle because it gives a full view of how tightly Portofino wraps around the small harbor. From up on the hillside near Castello Brown, I could see the curve of the waterfront, the line of painted facades, and the church rising just behind the town. The light was strong but still warm, with the sun hitting the front of the buildings and leaving parts of the hillside in shade. That contrast helped separate the village from the dense green slopes around it.
What pulled me in most was the mix of order and clutter. The harbor itself is neat and compact, but every part of the frame has something going on: moored sailboats in the foreground, smaller boats tucked into the inner marina, narrow streets disappearing between the buildings, and large villas scattered higher up the hill. It feels busy without looking chaotic.
I kept the composition fairly simple and let the elevated viewpoint do the work. The wider end of my 17-55mm lens was useful here because I wanted the boats in the foreground and the whole curve of the harbor in one frame without losing the sense of height. I also waited for the water to catch a deep blue tone, which gave the softer building colors something solid to sit against.
For me, this is one of those views that explains Portofino right away. It shows the scale of the place, the way the town sits in the landscape, and why people stop here and just look for a while.
