About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Man at Work in Bratislava Old Town, Slovakia, shows the well-known Čumil statue on Panská Street, near the corner with Rybárska brána. I photographed it at street level in soft daylight, when the pale stone pavement and bronze surface felt calm and even.
I like this piece because it turns an ordinary street corner into something playful without trying too hard. The figure leaning out of the manhole is one of those details that people remember after walking through the old center. It sits low to the ground, so the best way to photograph it is to get down close and work from the same level. That angle makes the face, hands, and curve of the open manhole cover feel more personal, and it also lets the pavement lines lead gently into the frame.
What interested me most was the contrast between the heavy bronze and the relaxed expression. There is a lot of character in the worn surface, especially on the helmet, nose, and hands where many visitors have touched the statue over the years. I kept the composition simple so those details would carry the picture. The background stays quiet and slightly soft, which helps keep the attention on the figure without making the scene feel empty.
I made this photo while walking through central Bratislava and taking my time with the smaller things people can miss between the bigger landmarks. Not every frame from a city needs a skyline or a famous building. Sometimes a low, funny street sculpture says more about the place and how people experience it. Using the EF-S 17-55mm let me stay fairly close while still keeping a natural perspective, which suited this subject well. For me, the photo works because it feels direct, familiar, and a little humorous.
