About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Nice Backyards in Bratislava, Slovakia, shows a quiet inner courtyard behind a row of older houses, photographed on a bright day in the warmer part of the year. I made this photo from an upper-floor window looking down into the shared garden space, when the trees were full and the light was soft but still clear.
What caught my eye was how ordinary and well-kept the whole place felt. The curved stone paths, the small circular patch of grass, and the little bench with two figures on it gave the courtyard a calm rhythm. Behind that, the houses add another layer, with faded walls, orange roof tiles, skylights, and tall windows lined up in a way that feels very Central European to me. Nothing dramatic is happening, and that is really the point. I liked the contrast between the private garden below and the backs of the homes rising above it.
The trees do a lot of the work in this frame. One dark, dense tree sits almost in the middle and breaks up the facades, while the lighter green branches around it soften the edges of the buildings. The flowering tree on the left adds a bit of color without taking over. I tried to keep the composition balanced so the courtyard paths would lead the eye through the lower half of the photo, while the roofs and windows hold the upper half together.
I shot it fairly simply, with a natural perspective that keeps the space feeling lived-in and real. The standard zoom was useful here because I could frame both the garden and the back facades without forcing the scene too wide. For me, this photo is less about a landmark and more about the quiet residential side of Bratislava that you notice when you slow down and look past the street.
