About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Bratislava Old Town spreads out below St. Martin's Cathedral in this view from Bratislava Castle in Bratislava, Slovakia. I made this photo on a bright spring afternoon, looking down from the castle hill over the red roofs and the wider city beyond.
What I like most about this scene is how clearly Bratislava layers itself from front to back. The lower part of the frame is full of tight old rooftops, chimneys, church towers, and narrow streets that belong to the historic center. Then the skyline opens up and the newer buildings in the distance start to appear, giving the whole view a nice contrast without feeling too busy. St. Martin's Cathedral stands out right away on the right side of the frame, with its tall spire and pale walls rising above everything around it.
I took the photo from the castle grounds, where you get one of the best open views over the old center. The fresh green tree on the left helped frame the city and added some balance against the cathedral tower on the right. The light was soft but still strong enough to bring out the orange and red roof tiles, which are a big part of what makes Bratislava recognizable from above. The sky also helped a lot. It had thin clouds and enough texture to keep the upper half of the image from feeling empty.
I kept the composition fairly simple and let the height of the viewpoint do most of the work. With the 24-105mm lens, I could hold the cathedral and a wide section of the city together in one frame without losing the sense of distance. For me, this photo works as a straightforward look at Bratislava from above, with the old town, the cathedral, and the modern skyline all visible at once.
