About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Piazza del Duomo in Milan, Italy, with the Duomo di Milano rising over the square. I took this photo during a daytime walk in the city center, standing out in the open plaza in front of the cathedral.

I liked how everyday the scene felt even with such a famous building in front of me. The cathedral fills the background with all its sharp Gothic detail, but the square itself is busy in a much more ordinary way. People are crossing the paving, pigeons are scattered across the foreground, and one man walking through the frame gives the whole scene a sense of movement. That mix is what made me stop and take the picture.

The light was working nicely at that moment. The sun was low enough to throw long shadows across the stone, and the front of the Duomo was catching a soft warm light while the clouds behind it stayed darker and heavier. That contrast gave the facade more shape and helped the white marble stand out without making the scene feel overly polished. It felt like one of those city moments that changes quickly, so I wanted to keep it simple and direct.

I shot it from a low position near the paving so the pigeons and the crossing figure would sit large in the foreground, with the cathedral still dominating the frame behind them. Using a wide lens helped me hold the whole front of the Duomo and a good stretch of the square in one image. I also like the balance between the formal architecture and the small bits of daily life around it. For me, that is what Piazza del Duomo often looks like in real life: grand, crowded, slightly messy, and always moving.
