About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Villa Pizzo in Cernobbio, Italy, seen from the water on Lake Como in soft late-afternoon autumn light. I photographed it during my time around Cernobbio, with the villa, gardens, and hillside all lined up clearly from the lake.

What I like in this view is how the whole property unfolds in layers. The pale villa buildings sit low by the shore, then the terraces, stone walls, and tall cypress trees climb up the slope behind them. The mountains in the background give the scene a solid frame, but they do not overpower the house and gardens. The warm light on the facades and the yellow and orange trees makes it feel calm and settled, like one of those quiet moments on Lake Como when everything looks simple and balanced.

I took this from out on the lake rather than from the road or the garden side, which gives a much better sense of how Villa Pizzo is set into the shoreline. From this angle, the long waterfront, the small landing area, and the spread of the grounds are all visible at once. The water in the foreground is plain and steady, which helps keep the attention on the buildings and the textures of the trees. A few clouds drifting across the blue sky were enough to add shape without making the scene busy.

I kept the composition fairly straightforward because the place already has enough character on its own. The reach of the 24-105mm lens helped me frame the villa tightly enough to show the details of the estate while still leaving room for the hillside and mountain backdrop. For me, the photo is really about that mix of formal architecture, dense lakeside greenery, and the softer autumn color that settles over this part of Cernobbio.
