About This PhotoThe Story Behind

This photo captures an iconic view of Rhodes Harbor where I'm standing by the edge, admiring the serene blend of history and nature. You're gazing at one of the entry points to what was once a bustling ancient city. To the right, a modern pillar stands, topped with a sculpture of a stag. It serves as a solemn reminder of the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue that was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Atop this pillar, the stag gazes out to sea, echoing centuries of maritime heritage. Historically, the Colossus was a massive statue meant to celebrate Rhodes' victory over Cyprus in 305 BC, standing at the gateway to this vital port. To the left, St. Nicholas Fortress stands sturdy, a sentinel against time, with its ochre-colored stone offering a rustic contrast against the brilliant azure sea and sky. The light is perfect today, casting just enough shadow to sculpt the scene with depth and warmth, inviting the viewer to step back in time.
