Some Fine Details

The carved stone cross in Plaza de Armas, La Habana, Cuba, is the focus of this photo, with the bell tower of Castillo de la Real Fuerza rising behind it at dusk. I made this frame during an evening walk through Old Havana, when the sky was turning gray-blue and the first warm lights were starting to show.

What caught my eye was the contrast between the two layers. The cross in the foreground is full of small figures, worn edges, and hand-carved detail, while the tower behind it is simpler and softer, pushed slightly out of focus. I liked how that separation let the stonework stand out without losing the sense of place. Even without seeing the whole square, the mix of colonial stone, religious sculpture, and the old tower says a lot about this part of the city.

I photographed it from ground level in the plaza, keeping the cross off to the left and the tower to the right so they would balance each other instead of overlapping too neatly. The evening light helped a lot. It was flat and quiet, which worked better than harsh sun for showing the texture in the stone. The little glow inside the tower openings adds just enough warmth to break up the cool sky.

A longer focal length helped me pull the two elements together and simplify the background. That made the photo less about the whole scene and more about the relationship between these details. I called it Some Fine Details because that is really what held my attention in that moment: the small carved figures, the rough surface of the cross, and the way an old Havana landmark could sit in the background like a quiet reminder of where I was.
