Parque Central

Parque Central in La Habana, Cuba, photographed in daytime from the edge of the square beside the José Martí statue. I took this during my time in Havana, looking across the palms toward the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso and the nearby civic buildings around the park.

What I liked about this scene was how much of central Havana it pulled together in one frame without feeling crowded. The white monument stands in the foreground, the Cuban flag cuts across the sky on the left, and the theater fills the background with all its ornate detail. The heavy cloud cover gave the light a flat, muted look, which worked well with the pale stone and made the shapes of the buildings and palms stand out more clearly. It feels warm and tropical, but not postcard-perfect, which is probably why I like it.

I shot it from ground level on the paved side of Parque Central, keeping enough distance to let the statue, flag, palm trees, and theater sit together naturally. From this angle, the square opens up and you get a real sense of how formal the space is, even with people walking through it and traffic moving behind the trees. The red bus in the middle distance and the hotel sign off to the right add a bit of everyday city life that keeps the picture grounded.

I used a mid-range zoom for this, which helped me frame the whole scene without going too wide and distorting the buildings. That felt important here because the architecture already has so much character on its own. I didn’t want to overdo it. I just wanted a balanced view of Parque Central as I saw it that day: grand, busy, a little weathered, and very clearly Havana.
