About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta stands at the entrance to Havana Bay in La Habana, Cuba. I photographed it from the Malecón in Centro Habana on an overcast day, with calm water, dark clouds, and a few people spread along the seawall.

What I liked about this scene was how steady and quiet it felt. The fort has a heavy, solid shape, but the weather softened everything around it. The gray sky flattened the light and kept the colors muted, so the stone walls, the pale water, and the concrete edge of the Malecón all sit in the same calm range. That made the small details stand out more for me, especially the lighthouse tower, the low buildings inside the fort, and the patches of green algae on the rocks near the water.

I took this from the broad waterfront walkway looking west toward the headland, with the long line of the seawall pulling the eye straight to the fortress. A few people sitting and standing along the edge helped give the place some scale without taking over the frame. They also add to the everyday feeling of Havana's seafront, where locals and visitors end up sharing the same stretch of concrete and sea breeze.

I kept the framing fairly simple and let the scene breathe. The 24-105mm range was useful here because I could hold both the fort and enough of the foreground wall to keep that strong leading line. For me, the photo is less about drama and more about the mood of the harbor edge: old stone, heavy sky, still water, and a famous fort seen from a very ordinary public walkway.
