About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this shot during my visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, with my Canon EOS 7D. The city is full of incredible architecture, and St. Isaac's Cathedral is a prime example. The golden dome caught my eye, and I wanted to capture it alongside the street vibe. The juxtaposition of the ancient dome and the modern traffic sign struck me as amusing. St. Isaac's is one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world. Interestingly, the dome is covered in pure gold, which adds to its impressive look against the usually overcast St. Petersburg sky.
As I wandered around, this scene perfectly encapsulated the blend of historical and everyday life in the city. The sign in the foreground provides a pop of yellow that complements the gold of the dome, creating a unique balance. I decided to focus on the sign to include a piece of daily life and let the magnificent dome sit just slightly out of focus, showing how the grand and mundane coexist here effortlessly.
Shooting in a bustling city like this often involves waiting for the perfect moment when cars and people clear from the frame to keep the shot clean. I waited for just the right pause in traffic, capturing the red light as well. It adds a sense of waiting, as if inviting viewers to take a moment to appreciate the iconic view.
