A Black Bear Looking For Food

A black bear searches the shoreline for food at North Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm Fjord near Juneau, Alaska. I photographed it during a boat trip in daylight, while it moved carefully along the smooth rock right above the water.

What I like about this frame is how small the bear looks against the broad glacier-scoured slope. The scene feels simple and quiet. There is no forest, no dramatic action, just the animal working its way along the edge and checking the rocks for something to eat. That plain behavior is what made me stop and pay attention. It felt very honest and very normal, which is often more interesting to me than a big wildlife moment.

The pale rock surface carries a lot of the picture. It has soft blue, gray, and rusty streaks running across it, probably left by water, minerals, and years of ice movement. Those lines gave me a clean background and also helped show the direction the bear was moving. The dark fur stands out strongly against that light stone, so the subject stays clear even though the composition is wide and understated.

I was shooting from a boat in Tracy Arm, looking slightly down toward the shore. Using a long lens helped me isolate the bear without losing the scale of the place around it. I didn’t want to crop in too tightly, because the surrounding rock and the narrow strip of cold green water are part of the story. They show the kind of coastal environment the bear was using and make the whole scene feel more real.

This is one of those wildlife photos I value because it is calm. It shows a black bear doing something ordinary in a very specific Alaska setting, and that was enough.
