About This PhotoThe Story Behind

A vulture spreads its wings in the dunes near Huacachina, just outside Ica, Peru. I photographed it in the desert light during my time around the Huacachina Oasis, with the late-day sun warming the sand behind it.

What caught me first was how still everything felt for a moment. The bird was low on the ridge, almost level with my eye line, and then it opened its wings wide as if it was testing the wind before moving again. That simple shape against the soft dunes was enough. I didn’t need a wider scene or more action. The empty sand around it gave the bird room, and the dark body stood out cleanly against the pale background.

I was shooting from a low position on the dune so the crest of sand would sit across the bottom of the frame and keep the background simple. The layered slopes behind it helped show the setting without pulling attention away from the subject. There’s a nice contrast in this place: a scavenger bird that feels wild and heavy, set against smooth desert lines that look almost weightless.

I used a long lens for this frame because I wanted to isolate the vulture and compress the dunes behind it a little. That let the background fall soft while keeping the wings and head as the main point of focus. The telephoto view also helped me avoid clutter and stay with a cleaner composition.

I like this photo because it feels quiet and slightly strange in a good way. People usually connect Huacachina with sandboarding, dune buggies, and the oasis itself. I remember this moment more for the pause between all that movement, when the desert felt open and calm and this single bird completely owned the scene.
