About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The 1st World War Monument in Gordes, France, stands in the village center near Place du Château. I photographed it on a clear daylight visit, with the stone soldier lit by soft sun against the pale facade behind him.
What drew me in was the directness of the monument. The figure is not dramatic or triumphant. He stands still, holding his rifle, and that quiet pose says more than a bigger gesture would. The inscription at the base makes the purpose plain: a memorial to the people of Gordes who died in 1914–1918. In a village known for its hilltop views and old stone streets, I liked stopping for a moment to look at something more local and personal.
I framed the statue from slightly below so the soldier would stand clearly against the sky and the upper part of the building behind it. That angle helped separate the figure from the busy square and gave the monument a stronger shape in the frame. The warm plaster wall, shutters, and tiled roof in the background keep the photo rooted in Provence without pulling attention away from the memorial itself.
I also like the contrast between the carved stone and the everyday details around it. The monument has weight and permanence, while the restaurant frontage and antennas behind it remind me that these memorials sit inside normal daily life. That mix matters to me. It shows how remembrance becomes part of a place instead of being sealed off from it.
I kept the composition simple and fairly tight. The zoom range on my Canon EF-S 17-55mm was useful here because it let me isolate the statue and still leave enough of the surroundings to show where it stands. For me, this photo is really about presence, memory, and how a small village square can hold a lot of history in plain sight.
