About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The Mediterranean Sea at Blue Beach on Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France. I took this photo from the beachfront terrace in soft evening light, looking out over the pebbled shore and the calm water.
What I liked most was the simple arrangement of the beach before it got busy. The blue-and-white umbrellas, the rows of deck chairs, and the wide band of sea gave the scene a very clear rhythm. Nice has a lot of movement along the coast, but this moment felt quiet and ordered. The beach was almost empty, and that made the repeating shapes stand out more.
The light was gentle rather than dramatic. The sky is pale, the horizon is clean, and the water shifts from silver to light blue as it comes closer to shore. I wanted to keep that soft feeling and let the patterns do most of the work. The striped umbrellas pull the eye through the frame, while the small waves and smooth horizon keep everything calm.
I shot it from a slightly raised position above the beach, which helped line up the chairs and umbrellas against the sea. That viewpoint also let me include the pebble texture that is so typical of Nice. It is not a sandy beach scene, and I think the stones matter here because they add a rough surface under the neat geometry of the furniture.
I used my Canon EOS 7D with the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, and the focal range was useful for framing the beach tightly without losing the open feeling of the water. For me, the photo is really about balance: organized beach details in the foreground, open Mediterranean space beyond, and the relaxed mood you get on the Nice shoreline near the end of the day.
