A Couple at Bund

A couple stands along the Bund waterfront in Shanghai, looking across the Huangpu River toward Lujiazui at night. I made this photo from the riverfront promenade in Waitan, close to Chenyi Square, during an evening walk when the skyline was fully lit.

What pulled me in was the contrast between the quiet pose in the foreground and the very busy skyline behind them. The Oriental Pearl Tower is the main anchor, with the Shanghai World Financial Center and Shanghai Tower rising farther back, and all of it reflects in the dark water below. From this side of the river, the Pudong skyline feels close and theatrical, but the couple leaning on the railing gives the scene a calmer center.

I framed them low and let the red dress spread across the stone pavement so it would hold the bottom of the image and balance the bright city lights above. The curve of the railing also helped me place them naturally in the middle without making the composition feel stiff. I like how the dress adds one strong color in the foreground while the neon pinks, blues, and white lights across the river build the background.

This was clearly a night scene, with low clouds hanging over the towers and soft reflections moving across the Huangpu. I didn’t want the people to compete with the skyline, so I kept them mostly turned away and let the setting do a lot of the work. That made the photo feel more about the moment than about individual faces.

I shot it with a flexible zoom, which helped me fine-tune the framing without stepping too far forward on the promenade. For me, the picture works because it mixes a personal moment with one of the most recognizable views in Shanghai, and neither part overpowers the other.
