About This PhotoThe Story Behind

The Forbidden City in Beijing, China, seen from the courtyard in front of the Hall of Supreme Harmony during the day. I made this photo on a busy visit, with a line of visitors moving up the central stairway under a dark, heavy sky.

I liked the straight-on view because it shows the balance of the building so clearly. The wide stone terrace, the red columns, and the long roofline all sit in a very ordered frame, while the crowd below brings in a bit of movement and scale. It feels formal and crowded at the same time, which matched my experience of walking through the palace complex.

The light was doing a lot of the work for me. The roof was catching a warm break in the clouds, while the sky behind it was turning deep and dramatic. That contrast made the golden tiles stand out much more than they would have under flat midday light. I waited until the scene felt evenly filled, with people spread across the foreground and enough space left around the steps to keep the symmetry readable.

I shot it from the main approach facing the hall, keeping the camera centered so the stairs and doorway lines stayed clean. A mid-range zoom was useful here because I could frame the full width of the hall without making the architecture feel stretched. I didn’t want to isolate a detail. I wanted the full front view, with the scale of the building and the steady flow of visitors together in one frame.

For me, that mix is what makes the place memorable. The architecture is imposing, but it never feels empty or frozen. There is always a human rhythm in front of it, and that helped me make a photo that feels more lived-in than formal.
