Ancient Majesty of Tlos
About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this photo at the ancient city of Tlos, nestled in the scenic landscapes of Muğla, Turkey. Standing here, I was immediately captivated by the grandeur of the King's Tombs, their unique forms silently narrating tales from the past. These tombs, carved into the cliffs, date back to the Lycian period, highlighting the architectural prowess of the era. Tlos is one of the oldest and largest settlements of Lycia, referred to as Tlawa in Lycian language inscriptions.
The city is steeped in mythology, believed to be the home of the legendary hero Bellerophon and his winged horse Pegasus. As I walked among the ruins, the air was thick with history—echoes of ancient civilizations that once thrived here. The site's strategic location atop a hill provides sweeping views of the lush Xanthos Valley and the rugged Taurus Mountains, a breathtaking juxtaposition of natural and man-made splendor.
The necropolis, where the King's Tombs are located, offers a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the past, with its rock-cut tombs demonstrating the significance placed on the afterlife. The remains of Roman baths, an agora, and a theater further illustrate Tlos's importance as a vibrant cultural and commercial hub in antiquity.
Exploring Tlos, I felt a profound connection to history, each stone whispering stories of long-gone eras. This place is a treasure trove for anyone passionate about history and mythology, where the past and present converge in an awe-inspiring landscape.
