About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The Jardin Exotique d’Èze overlooks the Mediterranean from the hilltop village of Èze in the south of France. I made this photo on a bright, slightly hazy day, looking out from the garden terraces above the roofs and down toward the coast.
What I like most about this view is how many layers it has without feeling crowded. The cactus and aloe in the foreground give the frame a rough, spiky texture, then the stone paths and sculptures lead down through the garden, and beyond that the old tiled roofs of Èze pick up the warm light. After that, the whole coastline opens out with Cap Ferrat and the bay in the distance. It is a very high viewpoint, and that drop toward the sea is a big part of what makes the place memorable in person.
I wanted to keep the garden itself as important as the panorama, so I framed the larger aloe on the right and the statue on the left to hold the edges of the picture. That way the eye moves through the plants first before going out to the water. The light was soft enough to keep detail in the sea and the hills, but still warm enough to bring out the reds and greens in the succulents and the orange roof tiles.
I took this with my Canon EOS 7D and the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8, which worked well for a wide view like this without making the scene feel too stretched. For me, this photo says a lot about Èze as a place: steep, quiet, sunlit, and suspended somewhere between a mountain garden and the open sea.
