About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Reflections in Nice at Promenade du Paillon, near Hôtel Aston La Scala, during a warm late-afternoon walk in central Nice, France. I made this photo while crossing the park and stopped when the shallow water turned the whole scene into a mirror.

What I liked most was how ordinary city life and the reflection worked together. People were walking along the edge of the water, the long hotel facade was catching soft light, and the hills behind the center of Nice were fading into a light haze. The surface of the fountain pool was calm enough to hold the buildings, trees, and sky almost intact, but not so perfect that it felt static. A few small ripples and footsteps around the edges kept it real.

I was standing along the paved side of Promenade du Paillon, looking across one of the broad mirror pools that run through the park. From that angle, the lines in the paving and the edge of the water pulled everything toward the middle distance, where the park, the facades, and the hillside all meet. The scene felt open and relaxed, which is something I remember clearly about Nice in the evening.

I kept the framing wide to include the hotel, the walkway, the trees, and as much of the reflection as possible. That wider view helped the photo feel balanced, with the city above and the inverted city below sharing the frame almost equally. I didn't want to isolate one detail. The point for me was the mix of architecture, public space, and that quiet reflective surface sitting right in the middle of town.

It's a simple street-and-city moment, but the reflection gave it just enough structure to hold everything together.
