About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A pink classic car parked by the Payret sign on Paseo del Prado in La Habana, Cuba. I photographed it in daylight during my time in the city, with the old theater facade filling the frame behind it.
What caught my eye was the contrast between the bright car and the worn, pale building around it. The big vintage letters of Payret, the balconies, the shutters, and the arcade at street level all helped place the car in a very specific part of Havana. It feels like a scene that belongs to the city, not something arranged for a photo. The car has that polished, candy-colored look that stands out immediately, but the background keeps it grounded in everyday street life.
I liked how the car sat almost perfectly below the sign, as if the whole composition had been waiting there. The repetition of the arches and windows gave me a clean structure to work with, while the bright pink body broke up all the beige and gray tones. A slightly tighter framing helped me keep the attention on that relationship between the car and the building, instead of letting the rest of the street pull the eye away.
There is also a nice mix of polish and wear in the scene. The convertible looks carefully maintained, while the facade behind it shows age, grime, and small signs of use. That contrast says a lot about Havana without needing anything dramatic. I wanted the photo to feel simple and direct, more like an honest street observation than a postcard version of the city. For me, the appeal is in that balance: a classic car, a recognizable old cinema building, and an ordinary moment on one of Havana's best-known streets.
