About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Classic cars along the Malecón in Centro Habana, La Habana, Cuba. I photographed this scene on a bright day from the sidewalk across the road, with one turquoise car close to me and a pink convertible parked in front of an old apartment building.
What I liked here was the way Havana seemed to arrange the frame for me. The building already had a lot going on: worn white walls, pink ground floor panels, yellow window trim, small balconies, and shutters in different positions. Then the two cars added another layer of color without feeling forced. The turquoise car fills the lower right side of the frame and gives the photo some weight, while the pink convertible across the street keeps the eye moving deeper into the scene.
I made this photo near the Malecón, in the Centro Habana stretch where traffic, sea air, and old architecture all sit close together. Even without seeing the water, the setting feels tied to that part of the city. The buildings have that faded look the salt and weather seem to leave behind, and the old cars fit naturally into it rather than standing out as props.
I kept the composition fairly straight and simple because the geometry did most of the work. The repeated windows and balconies gave me a grid to work with, and the car in the foreground broke that structure just enough. A wide-angle lens helped me include both the street and the full height of the facade while still keeping the nearest car large in the frame.
For me, this photo says a lot about Havana without trying too hard. It has the old cars people expect, but it also has the everyday street, the worn building, and the casual feeling of the city moving at its own pace.
