About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Our Lady of Kazan Orthodox Cathedral in Centro Habana, Havana, Cuba, photographed on an overcast evening. I took it from Avenida del Puerto as an old American car passed in front of the church.
I liked the contrast right away. The cathedral has the white walls and onion domes you would expect from a Russian Orthodox church, but in front of it there was a classic Havana street scene with a blue vintage car moving by. That mix is what made me stop. It felt like two different places meeting in one frame, without looking forced.
I shot this from street level, almost straight on, so the building keeps its weight and shape. The low angle lets the domes rise into the dark sky, and the clouds do a lot of work in the picture. They flatten the light, keep the whites of the church clean, and make the gold dome stand out more than it would on a bright sunny afternoon. The lit streetlamp and the small warm lights in the windows added just enough color to break up all the gray and white.
There is also a nice bit of movement at the bottom of the frame. I left the passing car slightly blurred, which gives the scene some life and makes it feel more like Havana instead of a static architectural study. The church stays solid and calm while the street keeps moving. I used a moderate focal length on my 24-105mm lens to keep the proportions natural and still include enough of the facade, bell tower, and sky. For me, the photo is really about that simple contrast: Russian church architecture, Cuban street traffic, and a heavy evening sky all in the same place.
