About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A pink classic car passes an old mansion in Vedado, Havana, Cuba. I photographed it on Calle 2, near Avenida de los Presidentes, during a daytime walk through the neighborhood.
What caught my eye was the contrast between the car and the building behind it. The car is bright, clean, and full of personality, while the house feels worn down, with cracked walls, open windows, and heavy columns that still show how grand it once was. That mix felt very Havana to me. Nothing in the scene looks staged. It just feels like an ordinary moment on the street, but with details that make you stop.
I framed the car broadside so its long body and pointed rear fin would read clearly against the facade. The house takes up most of the background, which gives the photo a sense of place without pulling attention away from the car. I liked the way the pale stone, faded plaster, and bits of green around the steps and porch kept the pink from feeling too loud. The soft daylight helped too. There are no hard shadows, so the colors stay even and the texture in the building comes through.
I shot this with a mid-range zoom, which let me keep a natural perspective and hold both the car and the architecture together in one frame. For me, the picture is less about a single vehicle and more about the everyday street character of Vedado. The old car is the obvious subject, but the weathered mansion is just as important. Together they say a lot about the city without needing anything extra.
