About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Classic cars roll along Paseo del Prado in Centro Habana, La Habana, Cuba, in bright midday light. I made this photo during my time in Havana while the traffic, old facades, and the domed roofline of El Capitolio all lined up in one frame.

What I liked most was how everyday the moment felt, even with such famous surroundings. The colorful taxis and vintage American cars are the first thing most people notice in Havana, but I wanted to place them in the wider street scene instead of isolating a single vehicle. From my spot near the crosswalk on Paseo del Prado, I could use the long row of buildings to pull the eye toward the Capitol in the background. The street has that mix Havana does so well: elegant architecture, worn details, busy traffic, and color everywhere.

The blue and green cars at the front gave me a clear anchor, and the yellow coco taxis behind them added another layer without making the frame feel messy. I also liked the contrast between the polished curves of the cars and the older balconies, columns, and ornament on the buildings. Nothing in the scene feels staged. It is just the rhythm of the city moving through the center of Havana on a bright day.

I shot it with a Canon EOS 7D Mark II and a 24-105mm lens, which helped me compress the scene a little and keep the cars and the Capitol visually connected. That mattered more to me than any close detail. I wanted the photo to show why Havana streets are so memorable: not only because of the classic cars, but because the whole setting around them has its own character.
