About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Catedral de San Servasio stands in the middle of Valladolid, Yucatán, on the south side of Parque Principal Francisco Cantón. I photographed it at blue hour, just after rain, when the stone facade was starting to pick up the streetlights and the sky still held a heavy blue tone.

I liked the contrast between the old church and the ordinary street life passing in front of it. The wet pavement, parked cars, and the rider waiting on a white motorcycle make the scene feel lived in instead of staged. That mix is what caught my attention. The cathedral has a solid, almost block-like front, but the two bell towers and the palms soften it a bit, especially with the evening light coming on inside the openings.

I took this from across the street so I could keep the full height of the building and include some of the road in the foreground. That extra space matters to me because it shows how the cathedral sits in the city rather than isolating it as just a monument. You can see the low wall, the entrance gate, the palms, and the movement of traffic all in one frame, which says more about the place than a tighter crop would.

The cloudy sky helped a lot. In stronger sunlight, the pale stone could have looked flat, but under this darker evening light the texture of the facade comes through better. The warm lamps around the entrance and towers also stand out more. I used a medium zoom range here, which let me keep the architecture natural-looking without pushing the perspective too hard. For me, the photo is less about a postcard view and more about the everyday presence of Catedral de San Servasio in Valladolid at the end of the day.
