Che Guevara

Che Guevara is painted on a worn wall in Habana Vieja, La Habana, Cuba, and I photographed it during a daytime walk through the old streets. I took this along Calle Sol, in the San Isidro area of Old Havana, when the light was flat and soft enough to keep the textures clear.

What caught my eye was the contrast between the famous face and the building around it. The portrait is rough and fading, and it sits between two metal gates under a cracked facade with peeling plaster, an old balcony, and a heavy wooden door. Nothing about it feels polished. That is exactly why I stopped. The wall carries years of weather, repairs, and neglect, and the painting feels like part of that history instead of something added for display.

I framed it straight on so the whole facade could do some of the storytelling. The mural alone would have been too simple. The real interest, for me, was the way the image of Che sits inside everyday Havana architecture: ironwork, patched stone, worn paint, and the narrow strip of street at the bottom of the frame. There is also a passing figure at the edge, slightly blurred, which adds a little movement without taking attention away from the wall.

I used a wide lens here because I wanted the full setting, not just the portrait. The extra space around the mural lets the surface details breathe and shows how small the painting really is compared with the building. For me, the photo is less about a clean depiction of a political icon and more about how that image lives on in the streets, marked by time like everything else around it.
