About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Plaza Vieja in Old Havana, Cuba, photographed in the late afternoon. I took this in Plaza Vieja, the historic square in La Habana Vieja, as the light started to soften and the cafés began to fill up.
What I liked most was the mix of color and wear in the buildings around the square. The blue balcony and shutters on the old stone facade pull a lot of attention, while the yellow corner arcade on the right helps frame the outdoor tables and the people sitting around them. It felt busy without being chaotic. There is a calm rhythm to the scene, with people talking, resting, and watching the square in that easy way public spaces sometimes invite.
I photographed it from ground level near the café seating, looking across toward the arcaded buildings on the far side of Plaza Vieja. That angle let me keep the tables in the foreground and still show the architecture clearly behind them. The open space of the square and the rows of metal chairs give the photo a sense of everyday use, not just a postcard view of old buildings. That balance mattered to me. I wanted the square to feel lived in.
The soft side light helped bring out the texture in the stone columns and the chipped walls without making the scene feel harsh. I used a mid-range focal length on my 24-105mm lens so I could keep the frame natural and avoid stretching the buildings too much. For me, the photo is really about how Plaza Vieja works as a social space as much as an architectural one. The old facades are beautiful, but the people sitting, talking, and taking a break are what make the place feel real.
