About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Cruise ships move through Tracy Arm Fjord in Tongass National Forest, Alaska, on a bright summer day. I made this photo from the water near Tracy Arm, looking down the narrow fjord as small pieces of ice floated across the surface.
What pulled me in was the scale. The ships are big on their own, but in this setting they look small against the steep rock walls and the wide bands of late-season snow high above them. The fjord feels tight and quiet at the same time, with the mountains closing in from both sides and the water acting like a flat, cold mirror. The scattered ice in the foreground gives the scene another layer and makes it clear that this is glacial water, not just another coastal passage.
I framed the photo so the larger ship sits low in the scene and the mountains do most of the work. That balance mattered more to me than filling the frame with the vessels. I wanted the image to show how people move through this landscape rather than turn it into a simple ship portrait. The smaller boats in the channel help with that too. They give a sense of distance and make the main ship feel even farther inside the fjord.
I used a long telephoto setup for this view, which let me pull the background closer and stack the layers of water, rock, forest, and snow. That compression helped simplify a very large scene and made the ships sit more naturally inside it. What I like most is the contrast between the calm water and the heavy terrain around it. Even with the traffic in the fjord, the place still feels remote and cold.
