About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Silverking Lodge sits on the waterfront near George Inlet, south of Ketchikan, Alaska, and I photographed it on a clear summer day. I was standing right by the shoreline, looking across the quiet water toward the forested hills, with a carved wooden figure filling the right edge of the frame.

What I liked most about this scene was how calm it felt without being empty. The inlet was smooth, the light was bright but soft enough to keep detail in the trees, and the thin clouds stretched out in long shapes that gave the sky some movement. The small points of land and the dark line of evergreens helped break up the water and pull my eye deeper into the background.

The carved figure on the right is what really made me stop and take the photo. Without it, the view would still be nice, but it would be a straightforward coastal landscape. The sculpture gives the scene a stronger sense of place and adds a human element without needing any people in the frame. I liked the contrast between the rough texture of the wood and the smooth water beside it.

I used a moderate wide focal length on my Canon 5D Mark IV with the 24-105mm lens so I could include both the statue and the shoreline without making either feel too small. That balance was the main reason I framed it this way. I wanted the landscape to stay open and spacious, while still giving the foreground enough weight to hold the composition together.

This is one of those Alaska views I remember for its simplicity. No dramatic weather, no big action, just clean light, still water, and a quiet corner of the coast that felt worth slowing down for.
