About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Traditional folk dancers perform in Belém, Lisbon, Portugal, in late afternoon light beside the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. I photographed this outdoor dance scene on the broad calçada pavement near Praça do Império during a public gathering.
What caught my eye first was the motion in the skirts. The black fabric spreads out in wide circles, and the bright red headscarves make the whole group stand out against the pale stone ground and the green trees behind them. I like how the dancers fill almost the entire frame, so the energy feels close and immediate instead of distant. Even without seeing the full event around them, you can feel the rhythm and the coordination in the way their arms rise and their feet turn across the patterned pavement.
I made this photo from a low, close position, almost at the level of the spinning skirts. That angle helped me show the shape of the movement and also keep the old monastery and the line of tall trees in the background as a clear hint of place. Belém has a lot of famous landmarks, but I didn’t want a postcard view. I wanted something more grounded in the life of the square, with people using the space instead of just passing through it.
The warm light helped a lot. It gives some softness to the faces and clothes while still keeping enough contrast in the dark costumes. The paved surface is also important in the picture. The curved black-and-white pattern is very Lisbon, and it adds another layer of movement under the dancers. For me, that mix of local dress, public performance, and unmistakable setting is what makes the frame work. It feels lively and specific to the city without trying too hard.
