About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this photo from the Haleakala Crater in Kula, on the island of Maui. It's a place that truly feels like you're on top of the world. The clouds seem to drift right beneath your feet, flowing over the rugged landscape like a slow-motion waterfall. This shot captures that magical moment when the mountain peaks peek through the dense cloud cover. I used my Canon EOS 7D Mark II with an EF24-105mm lens, which really helped me get the wide view I wanted, capturing the sweeping expanse of clouds and earth.
Haleakala is known as the 'House of the Sun.' Local legends say the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its crater to slow its descent, giving the island more daylight hours. Standing here, it's easy to see why such stories exist. The landscape is otherworldly, almost lunar, and the air is incredibly fresh and thin. At over 10,000 feet above sea level, this national park offers some of the best sunrises and sunsets you’ll ever experience. I was lucky enough to be there on a clear day, with visibility stretching all the way to the horizon. The experience reminds you just how small we are in the grand scheme of things, surrounded by such immense natural beauty.
