About This PhotoThe Story Behind

This is a shot from my visit to Iao Valley, located in Waiuku, Hawaii. I used my Canon EOS 7D Mark II with an EF-S10-22mm lens to capture the lush green hills and towering peaks. The valley is known for its stunning scenery and is a significant historical site in Hawaii. The iconic Iao Needle, a sharp ridge covered in greenery, can be seen in the distance, framed by the dramatic sky. I was lucky to witness the clouds creating a dynamic background, emphasizing the vibrant landscape. The wide-angle lens allowed me to include both the majestic peaks and the rich vegetation in the foreground, showing the valley’s depth and beauty.

Iao Valley is not only a natural marvel but also a place packed with history. It was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790, a pivotal event in Hawaiian history. As I walked through the valley, I felt connected to the past and amazed by the breathtaking natural beauty. The lighting that day was perfect, casting soft shadows and highlighting the different shades of green around me. Shooting during mid-morning gave me nice, even lighting without harsh shadows, which helped in bringing out the details in the foliage.

This place is a go-to spot for both locals and tourists looking to explore Hawaii's unique landscapes. Hiking through the trails, you get to experience an array of plant species, some of which are unique to this part of the world. It's no wonder that Iao Valley is often referred to as a 'botanical garden' because everywhere you look, there is some plant life thriving. I hope this photo gives you a glimpse into the natural beauty and rugged charm of this incredible place.
