About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Bronze guardian lions at the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. I photographed them in late afternoon light in front of the Gate of Supreme Harmony, when the low sun brought out the warm gold tones in the metal and the rooflines behind them.

I liked the way these two figures lined up from my angle, with one lion close to the lens and softly blurred while the other stayed sharp in the middle of the frame. That overlap gave the scene a bit more depth and made the second lion feel more grounded against the palace buildings in the background. The setting is busy when you visit in person, but this tighter composition let me focus on the shapes, the curls in the mane, the open mouth, and the worn surface from years of weather and contact.

These lions are easy to walk past as part of the larger palace complex, but they hold a lot of character on their own. I spent a little time moving around them to find a position where the main figure stood clear against the red wall and tiled roof instead of getting lost in the crowd. The warm light helped a lot. It picked up the edges of the bronze and gave the scene a calm, almost quiet feel, even though the courtyard around it was not especially quiet.

I used a longer focal length for this photo so I could isolate the sculpture and compress the background a little. That helped simplify the scene and keep attention on the lion with its paw resting on the decorated ball. For me, the photo is really about texture, light, and that familiar palace detail that says Beijing right away without needing a wide view.
