A Shop in Beijing

A small traditional-style shop in Yuyuan Old Street, Shanghai, China. I photographed it during a visit to the old bazaar area, at a quiet indoor moment when the warm shelf lights were doing most of the work.

What caught my eye was how ordered and lived-in the place felt at the same time. The wooden counter runs straight across the frame, and behind it the shelves are packed from top to bottom with jars, teapots, cups, wrapped goods, baskets, and stacks of bamboo steamers. Nothing looks staged. It feels like a working shop that has been arranged slowly over time, with each object finding its own place.

The soft lighting is what made me stop. The room itself is fairly dim, but the shelves glow with a warm amber color that pulls out the texture of the wood, ceramic, glass, and paper packaging. That contrast between the darker walls and the bright shelving gave the scene a calm, enclosed feeling. I liked that the front counter stays simple while the background is full of small details, so the eye can move around without getting lost.

I framed it straight on because the symmetry suited the space. The shelves almost work like a stage set, and the person behind the counter adds a quiet human presence without taking over the picture. I did not want to turn it into a portrait. For me, the real subject was the interior itself and the way everyday objects described the character of the shop.

I used a wide lens for this, which helped me keep the whole counter and shelving unit in view without stepping too far back. That felt important because the relationship between the foreground counter and the stacked display behind it is what makes the photo work. It is a simple scene, but I like how much it says about daily life through ordinary things.
