About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The Mediterranean Sea seen from Rue Longue in Menton, France, on a calm, overcast day. I made this photo while walking through Menton’s old town and looking out toward the bay from the hillside streets above Plage des Sablettes.
What I liked most was the way the view opened up between the warm orange buildings. The shutters, roof tiles, and old street lamp gave me a strong foreground, and then the sea pulled everything outward toward the pale curve of the coast. Across the water, you can see the marina and the steep hillside rising behind the town, which gives the scene that very specific Menton mix of sea, dense buildings, and mountain backdrop.
I took the photo from a narrow street in the historic center, not far above the beach, where small gaps between the buildings suddenly frame wide views of the bay. The light was soft and even, with thin cloud cover taking the edge off the contrast, so the pastel walls and blue-green water sat well together without looking harsh. There is no dramatic weather or big sunset color here, and that is part of why I like it. It feels quiet and lived in.
I used a mid-range focal length on my Canon EOS 7D with the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM to keep the composition simple and natural. I did not want to go too wide and lose the sense of peeking through the street toward the sea. Keeping the lamp on the right side helped balance the frame and gave the scene a bit of structure without taking attention away from the water.
For me, this photo is really about that familiar Mediterranean contrast between close, textured old-town walls and the open space of the coast just beyond them.
