About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Museo de la Revolución in La Habana, Cuba, seen from inside the museum building in daylight. I took this photo during my visit to the former Presidential Palace, looking across an upper interior landing toward a tall doorway framed by old windows and stone details.

What caught me first was the way the Cuban flag filled the opening almost like a curtain, while the rest of the room stayed quiet and dim. The contrast between the bright red, white, and blue fabric and the faded green-gray interior made the whole scene feel very still. I liked how the flag became the clear center of the frame without needing anything else around it.

I photographed this from behind the marble balustrade on an upper floor inside the Museo de la Revolución. From that position, the columns, carved ceiling panels, and tall window frames all lined up in a very balanced way. The building has a formal, heavy look, and that order worked well with the strong vertical shape of the flag hanging in the middle.

The soft daylight coming through the frosted glass helped keep the details gentle instead of harsh. It gave the room an even tone and let the colors of the flag stand out on their own. I kept the composition centered because the architecture really called for it. A wide lens also helped me include the ceiling, the balcony rail, and the full height of the doorway, which made the space feel as important as the flag itself.

For me, the photo is really about that mix of scale and quiet. It shows a national symbol, but it also shows the museum as a place with age, weight, and atmosphere. I didn't want to overcomplicate it. I just wanted to hold onto the moment when the interior lines, the light, and the flag all came together cleanly.
