About This PhotoThe Story Behind

A smiling street musician sits with his guitar in Habana Vieja, La Habana, Cuba. I photographed him on Calle Amargura near Plaza de la Catedral during a daytime walk through the old city.

What caught me first was not the guitar but his expression. He looked completely at ease, sitting in that doorway as if he had all the time in the world. The big wooden door behind him gives the frame a strong shape, and his bright striped shirt breaks up all the brown and beige tones around him. It is a very simple scene, but it says a lot about the mood I remember from that part of Havana.

I liked how small he appears against the tall doorway. That bit of scale makes the photo feel quiet and a little playful at the same time. He is relaxed, smiling straight at me, and the guitar rests naturally in his hands, so nothing feels staged. The worn wall, the scuffed step, and the faded paint all add to the everyday feel of the street.

I made this photo in soft daylight, which kept the colors gentle and let the textures of the door and plaster show clearly without harsh shadows. I used a wide lens and stayed far enough back to include the full doorway, because that setting mattered as much to me as the person. The extra space around him is really the point. It shows how the city itself frames these little moments.

When I look at this picture now, I still think of that easy smile first. It is not a grand scene or a famous landmark. It is just a man with a guitar, a doorway, and a good mood on a street in old Havana. That honesty is exactly why I kept the photo.
