About This PhotoThe Story Behind

A street portrait of a woman in Old Havana, La Habana, Cuba, near Plaza Vieja. I made this photo during a daytime walk through the historic center, when the bright wall colors and direct street light were doing a lot of the work.

What drew me in was the mix of expression, color, and texture in a very small space. The yellow headwrap, the red flower, the beads, and the weathered wall behind her all came together naturally, and I wanted to keep that balance without overcomplicating it. Old Havana often gives you these layers at once. There is the person in front of you, but also the paint, the cracks, the noise of the street, and the way everything feels close.

I framed this tightly so the portrait would stay personal and direct. The background still matters, but only enough to hold the sense of place. You can feel the street in it without needing to see much more than the wall and the painted color behind her. That was important to me. I did not want a wider documentary view as much as I wanted a simple, honest portrait that still belonged clearly to Havana.

The light looks strong but not harsh, which helped keep the details in the skin, cloth, and jewelry. I used the mid-range reach of my 24-105mm lens to isolate the subject and keep the frame clean without stepping too far into the moment. That gave me a natural perspective and let the small details stay sharp.

For me, this photo is really about presence. It is not trying to explain the whole city. It is one brief encounter in Old Havana, and that felt like enough.
