About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A blue vintage car parked on a street in Centro Habana, La Habana, Cuba. I photographed it during the day on one of my walks through the city, when the flat light made the worn facade behind it stand out clearly.
What caught my eye was the contrast between the car and the building. The car has that solid, rounded shape you see all over Havana, and the bright blue paint immediately pulled me in. Behind it, the old facade is faded, cracked, patched, and partly boarded up. The columns and small balcony rails still give the building some structure, but most of what you notice first is age. I liked how the whole wall looked almost monochrome until the car cut across the bottom of the frame.
I framed it straight on and kept the composition simple. The car sits low across the image while the building rises above it in long vertical sections, so the photo becomes more about shape, color, and texture than about movement. There is almost no distraction around the subject, which helped me keep the scene quiet and direct. It felt like one of those everyday Havana moments that says a lot without needing much explanation.
I also liked the balance between care and decay. The car looks used, not polished for display, and that made it fit the street better. Nothing feels staged. It is just a normal parked car against a building that has been weathered by time, heat, and neglect. That combination is a big part of what stayed with me in Havana.
I used a mid-range zoom for this photo so I could stay a comfortable distance away and keep the lines tidy without exaggerating the perspective. That helped me hold the car and the facade together as one clean frame.
