About This PhotoThe Story Behind
People in Havana II was photographed in Old Havana, La Habana, Cuba, in daylight on one of my walks through the city. I made this portrait near Plaza Vieja, in the busy streets around the square, where music, conversation, and passing people seemed to mix together all day.
What caught my eye was the contrast between the calm expression of the man in the foreground and the worn wooden doorway covered in layers of writing and marks. The scene felt very Havana to me without needing a wide city view. The texture in the door, the narrow vertical bars, and the glimpse of people inside gave the frame a lot to work with. I liked how the setting says just as much as the person does.
I shot it straight on at street level, keeping the composition tight so the details of the entrance stayed important. The doorway acts almost like a stage set, with the man stepping through the frame while the interior remains partly hidden. There is a bit of visual noise in the background, but that is part of what I wanted to keep. It reflects the feeling of walking through Habana Vieja, where there is always movement just outside and just behind whatever has your attention.
The longer end of my zoom helped me isolate the moment without getting too close, which let the scene stay natural. I did not want to interrupt anything. I just wanted to hold onto that brief mix of character, texture, and everyday street life that I kept finding in Havana.
